I think it depends on your kids -- but I'd rather give money to family than a non-profit with unknown values and, let's be honest, they could change management entirely a few years after you'd passed on and suddenly your money is being spent for the thing furthest from your wishes.
and having seen the way some non-profits operate ... *shivers*
