NEW YORK (Dow Jones) -- U.S. retailers led by Wal-Mart Stores Inc. reported disappointing July sales as the last batch of government stimulus checks weresent out and cash-strapped consumers remained cautious about discretionary purchases.

    Oh yeah. That $600 payoff--like the $300 bribe for votes floated by Bush during the 2000 elections--was a freakin' brilliant idea.

    Did anyone actually believe a $600 rebate would cause more than a short-term blip on the screen of the economy?
